Advanced Treatments for mesothelioma patients

May 4th, 2008 . by Nina

While diagnosing mesothelioma accurately is the most difficult part of the mesothelioma treatments the actual treatments are no less complicated in comparison. Divergent methods of treatment are used to treat the disease including surgery, radiation administering, and chemotherapy in addition to traditional medicinal treatments. Scientists are constantly on the lookout for new methods of treatments for this rare form of cancer.

The most widely used treatment for mesothelioma is surgery. Using the surgery as the process of treatment the doctor may remove the affected part. Ordinarily it is the lining on the abdomen or the chest that is most affected. Sometimes a lung might also be removed and this operation is termed as pneumonectomy. In other cases the diaphragm that helps your breathing and located below the lungs is removed.

Another popular method of treatment of this disease is the radiation therapy or radiotherapy. High level energy rays are used and thrown on the affected parts to kill cancer or shrink down the cancerous growth of tumors. The good thing about it is that the radiation treatment affects only those parts that are affected with the cancer. Doctors use external machines or internal administrating of materials in the cancer cells to carry out the radiotherapy.

Last but not least there is the process of Chemotherapy. The mesothelioma doctor will use anti cancer drugs that would kill all the cancer cells existing in the body. The drugs are normally administered in form of intra-venous injections.
